EMHR’s Island in the Sun Paddle
Saturday, September 30, 2023
End your summer right by paddling to a beautiful island along our Pennsylvania River of the Year: the Susquehanna River North Branch! After the unfortunate cancellation of our Outdoor Heritage Expo, the Endless Mountains Heritage Region is still very much committed to engaging the public in outdoor recreation and educating them about our region’s history. The EMHR and Susquehanna Kayak & Canoe Rentals are partnering once again to host a special daylong paddle on Saturday, Sept. 30 in Wyoming County! Those who joined us for our Summer Heritage Benefit Paddle in July can see the rest of the Susquehanna River North Branch Water Trail’s section through Wyoming County by paddling from Tunkhannock to Falls Township! This is also a great paddle for those gaining miles for their 444 Club membership!
Participants should arrive at Susquehanna Kayak & Canoe Rentals (119 Krafty Rd, Falls, PA 18615) by 8:30 a.m. to check-in. Rented kayaks and canoes will already be on-site and those bringing their own watercraft can have their kayak or canoe loaded for transport. All participants will then be shuttled to Riverside Park in Tunkhannock (River Street, Tunkhannock, PA; 41.535896, -75.955925) for a safety briefing and kayaking demonstration. We plan to launch by 10 a.m. on the 12-mile river journey and will stop at DCNR Island 210 for a grilled lunch (hamburgers, hot dogs and sides) prepared by the staff of Susquehanna Kayak & Canoe Rentals. We will also have a local history presentation during lunch. We plan to arrive back in Falls at approximately 4 p.m. Registration is $45 for those bringing their own watercraft and $85 for those renting a single kayak, or $105 if renting a tandem kayak/canoe. The registration fee includes the guided paddle, insurance, lunch, and educational programming.
